MAY AND JUNE 2016
THIRD GRADE:

The students enjoyed learning the alphabets and many new vocabulary in Spanish during this year.

During  May and June they will review the following:
1.  The seasons and the weather.
2. The months of the year and telling their birthday, as well as their age.
3.   Asking and telling about physical well-being.
4.   Talking about time. What time is it?
5.   Sports and fun in the summer..

6. The food - Fruits and food

Basically, most of the lessons introduced this year were from the text book "Hola", which is the book they will be using in 4th grade.

FOURTH GRADE:

The students will be completing the textbook, "Hola" by the end of May. They will be reviewing and working on the following:

1. Telling the time
2. Favorite classes

3. The family.
4. The 50/50 project (50 questions and 50 answers). Due: Wednesday, June 1.

This project will prepare them for their last test. Last test: June 8

Go over each unit and select any question you know, write the questions, and the answer in your notebook. Number each question.

Example of 50/50 questions and answers project…

1. ¿Como te llamas? ….. Me llamo Richard.

2. ¿Qué es esto? ….. Es el globo.

5. Pinatas: Last project and a fun one. Making a piñata. Students love making their pinatas. Pinatas are very popular in 4th grade. The pinatas can be made with a partner or individually. The Pinatas are due on the day of their Fiesta in June 15 or TBA.

FIFTH GRADE:

We are completing fifth grade textbook, "Que tal". The children worked very hard this year and will be ready for Spanish 6th. In May and June they will be completing the following:

   1.   Daily routines in the morning and evening
2.   How to use regular verbs.
   3.   Review telling the time.
   4. Learning the names of people who work in schools.

5. 50/50 Project (Writing and answering questions from Units 5-11. Use questions from the

book or other materials they have worked on class). Due: June 1.

All fifth graders will receive a test review packet for their last 5th grade test in June 13.

SIXTH GRADE:

Sixth grader completed their textbook, "Adelante". They are finishing:

Unit 11 (naming people, places, and things related to shopping).

Unit 12 (naming beach and water sports, describe beach activities and talk about past action verbs).

This year they learned about Spanish-speaking countries, the cities/town, asking for directions around the city, going to a bank and restaurant, names of different places around the city, buying gifts, different occupations, money in Hispanic countries, and many important verbs.

Sixth grade final will be in June 13.

APRIL AND MAY 2016

Third Grade -

They finished the seven key questions, more weather vocabulary, and the months of the year.   They will start the body parts, clothing and reviewing the colors.  During the 4th marking period, they will reviewed many of the lessons taught during the year.

Fourth Grade -

Lesson 7 - Our new lesson is on feelings.
What's the matter? ... Que tienes?
They will review the following phrases:
I am hungry (tengo hambre), I am sleepy (tengo sueno),
I am thirsty, (tengo sed), I am cold, I am warm,
I am scare, and other feeling words.
Saying what they have and how they are.   Tienes ... Tengo....
They will learn when to use (tu) and when to use (usted) when addressing an adult..Also, we will discuss some ways Spanish-speaking families celebrate birthdays.

Lesson 8 - What time is it? They have reviewed the numbers 1-60.
In this unit they will ask and tell what time it is. Talk about schedules, and learn how to ask different types of questions.

Lesson 9 - What's your favorite class? They will talk about classes they like and dislike. Talk about things they do in school.

Fifth Grade -

Lesson 9 and 10 - Breakfast - Lunch - Dinner

Talking about the foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Fun vocabulary words to learn. Students are encouraged to practice at home, and when they go grocery shopping.
Example:
What do you want for breakfast, lunch and dinner?
What do you want to drink?
Talking about what they want to eat. What they like or dislike.
Also, they about foods in Spanish-speaking countries.

Lesson 11 - Daily routine and activities

Discuss things they do for themselves and things others do for themselves.

Sixth Grade   -

Lesson 8 - The Bank and Restaurant -  They finished learning the name of people working in a bank and restaurant. Also, things in the bank and restaurant.  They learned about the monetary value in most Spanish-speaking countries.

Sixth graders are required to make a money report on their assigned Spanish-speaking country. Money reports are due 20th.

Lesson 9 - La ciudad - The City

In this unit they will learn names of more places in a city.
Learn about where people are going, and where they are in different places around the city.  They will learn to describe how people are feeling and where things are.
Also, they will learn interesting things about Spanish-speaking countries.

Lesson 10 - Getting around in a foreign city or country.
In this unit they will learn:
Words useful for getting around in the city -
Talk about finding and losing their way -
Practice telling others politely what to do and what not to do -
Learn about towns and cities in Spanish-speaking countries.

APRIL AND MAY 2016

LA PRIMAVERA - THE SPRING MARCH - 2016

Third graders -

The third graders are continuing to practice the alphabet and numbers. They learned phrases on the weather and seasons. Que tiempo hace? Te gusta el verano? Hace frio, hace calor, and more phrases on the weather.

They also learned to express "how they are feeling" and how to ask each other "what's the matter?" - I am cold, warm, hungry, thirsty, sleepy, in pain and feeling warm.

Now, again they are working on numbers.... Learning to ask "what time is it?" Working on numbers 1-60.

During April, they will be describing pieces of clothing and parts of the body.

Fourth graders -

Unit 5:

The fourth graders enjoyed learning and reviewing the expressions on the weather. It's hot, it's cold, and learning the seasons. They are also learning to say, "What are you going to do?", "What do you like?, and other phrases in Spanish. Also, they covered talking about likes and dislikes. What do you like?

Unit 6:

In this unit they will be covering: the months, talking about their birthday, action words like; to swim, to dance, to walk, to paint, and other words. What do you want to do? How often do you do something? These questions are part of this unit.

Fifth graders

Unit 7 - In this unit they covered chores around the house, household appliances, and the necessary tools to clean the house. What we do at home?

Unit 8 -   This unit deals with things on the table .  The utensils, sugar, cream, napkins, salt, pepper and many more words.   Fruits like apples, cherries, pears, sandia, fresas bananas and other fruits are part of this unit.  They also learned two verbs, decir and traer (to say and to bring).

Unit 9    - Breakfast - Que hay de desayuno? This unit covers what we eat for breakfast and the drinks.  They will learn to say, eggs, cereal, toast and oatmeal.  They will also learn vocabulary words for lunch and dinner.  They will review, me gusta and no me gusta. I like and I don't like.

Sixth graders   -

Unit 6 - In this unit, they learned about traveling by air. Vocabulary: schedule, suitcase, pilot, airplanes arrivals & departures, on time, late, early, flight, to fly, and to land. The unit covered many important phrases regarding traveling by air.
The verb HACER (to do/to make) was introduced.

Unit 7 - In this unit, they will cover all the necessary vocabulary inside the hotel. Hotel phrases and the names of things inside the rooms. Also, hot and cold water.
This will be an easy lesson on the things we need in a hotel.

Unit 8 - The Bank and Restaurant

In this unit they will learned vocabulary relating to people and things at a bank when they are traveling. The restaurant vocabulary is very easy. We will create dialogues in a restaurant setting.

The seven key questions will play a big part with these units. Where, when, how, how many, why, who and what.

EL INVIERNO.... THE WINTER --- ENERO (JANUARY) -
FEBRUARY (FEBRERO) 2016

THIRD GRADE      -   The students will continue to work on the vowels and the alphabets.

They will be reviewing the following:
Colors (colores),
people and family,
rooms & things around the house,
days of the week &months,
and the seasons/weather during January and February.

FOURTH GRADE    -

Unit 3 - Reviewing and learning the days of the week.

Places in their neighborhood (store, school, movies, park and many other places.

Some of the question they will learn in Spanish:

1) Where are you going?.
2) What are you going to do?
This is a fun and challenging unit.

Unit 4 - They will continue to learn vocabulary words on their school and their town.

What are you going to do in class?
Learn the names of the classes they go to, and school activities.

Practice asking ; where they are going, and when they are going.

Unit 5 - Seasons and weather:

In this unit they will learn the months of the year.

The season and weather.
Telling when is their birthday.
Learn to express what they like to do and don't like to do.

Please encourage your child to copy all vocabulary in their notebooks, make flash cards, and study the words.

FIFTH GRADE -

The students finished learning the outside and inside of the house vocabulary.

UNIT 5 - En la Sala - In the Living room. - En el Dormitorio - In the Bedroom.

In this unit they will learn to ask and answer questions about their living room and bedroom furniture.
They will describe people, places and things.
Also, they will describe where something are located...
Learn the verb (gustar) to like.
Identify the masculine/feminine article. They will be learning nouns and important verbs relating to their bedroom and living room.

UNIT 6 In the kitchen - En la Cocina

Talking about things found in the kitchen, and things done in the kitchen.
Students will describe their kitchen and what they use in the kitchen.
Ar, Er, and Ir will be introduced to fifth graders in this unit.
Our next lesson will cover household chores.

I am encouraging the children to practice at home by labeling the things around the house. Please make sure they write their vocabulary words and study weekly.

SIXTH GRADE -

The students have finished learning about the town and city, the family and how Christmas is celebrated in Spanish-Speaking countries.

Sixth grade Mid-term:   The following will be covered: Units 1-3 -   The verb to go (Ir),  and The Family.

UNIT 4 - Talking about traveling and Spanish-Speaking countries / Nationalities.

They will learn more on the Spanish-Speaking Countries and nationalities.

This unit identifies and name modes of long-distance transportation.
It will name and identify countries where Spanish is spoken.

UNIT 5 - Talking about taking a trip.

Discussing travel destinations.
Arranging a trip and how much it cost.
In this unit numbers and telling the time will be recycled.
Also the months/seasons, forms of transportation, places in city, and weather will be review.

The students are also continuing to study three very important irregular verbs:
To be (ser and estar) and to go (ir).
They will continue working on the regular AR, ER, and IR verbs.

DICIEMBRE - DECEMBER 2015

3rd Grade   - Holidays - Family - Food

This is good time of the year to teach about the FOOD, FAMILY AND HOLIDAY. How Christmas is celebrated in Spanish-Speaking countries.   The children will certainly learn simple vocabulary on these topics.

4th Grade   -   Finished working on the colors, animals, shapes and sizes.

Our new lessons will cover days of week, saying where we are going and learning about places in our neighborhood. Also, they will learn about on how the holidays are celebrated in Spanish-speaking countries.

5th Grade

Learning about the exterior and interior parts of the house.
They will learn to desbribe the rooms in their house.
Furniture in the living room , bedroom...
We will re-cycle many words from previous units.
Assignment: One page report on how Christmas is celebrated in Spanish countries.

6th Grade -

We finished learning about the city...
The verb IR (to go) .. Learning simple vocabulary on getting around the city.

Family vocabulary will be introduced in December.
New Verbs will be introduced.
Assignment: One page report on how Christmas is celebrated in Spanish countries.

During the month of December, we will cover vocabulary relating to eating, visiting family, and how Christmas is Celebrated in Spanish-Speaking countries.

Third grade

Third graders are feeling comfortable greeting each other in Spanish and using the expressions of courtesy.

They are learning the alphabets. Each students will be able to spell their first and last name by the end of October.

They will have a short lesson on The Day of the Dead.

During October and November, they will work on the following:

Fifth Graders

Each student reported on a Saint from a Spanish-speaking country to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

Completed Unit I: Parts of the Body. Students will work on a posters on the body parts. This poster can be a silly poster with a Halloween theme.

Unit 2: Students will learn the names of different articles of clothing, Review colors and sizes.

Talk about likes and dislikes of clothing.

Unit 3: Personal appearance and personality traits. Describe hair types and hair color.

Describe body types and personal characteristics.

Unit 4: The exterior parts of a house.. roof, mailbox and stairs.

Name the rooms of a house such as kitchen, bedroom, and dining room.

The Day of the Dead and Holidays will be covered in class.

Sixth Graders

Reviewing of greetings and expressions of courtesy was excellent. Every

sixth grader should be able to greet in Spanish and use proper expressions of courtesy.

Hispanic Heritage Reports on a Spanish-speaking country.

Unit I: Sports and Hobbies; Expressions on favorite sports and hobbies was completed. The pronouns were reviewed.

The verb Jugar (to play) and Ser (to be) were introduced.

Bienvenidos a la clase de la Senora Ramos en Septiembre  2014

Welcome to our fun and exciting Spanish classes at St. James. I will be teaching third to sixth grade. Como estan? All students will be taught and encouraged to greet each other in Spanish by using the expressions of greetings and courtesy words. Short conversations in Spanish using the 7 key questions(what, when, where, how, why, who and how much) will be done weekly in class. Que, como, por que, quien, cuando, cuanto, donde)...

My main goal is to teach the language, the culture from Spanish-speaking countries, and mainly for the children to enjoy learning Spanish. It's very interesting to teach the culture and to embrace our common similarities. The children will be encouraged to practice Spanish at home and in their community. We will have many projects throughout the school year on celebrations from Spanish-speaking countries:

Hispanic Heritage Month - Sept. 15 - Oct. 15th.
Day of the Dead
Country Reports (Each child in 6th grade will be assigned a country for the year).
La Navidad (Christmas)
Three Kings Day (January)
Cinco de Mayo

THIRD GRADE

Third graders will be practicing greeting dialogues and expressions of courtesy with classmates. Soon they will have fun learning the alphabets, and will be able to spell their names in Spanish. They will get worksheets with vocabulary words from their lessons.  Make sure they keep them in their folders or binders.

FOURTH GRADE

Fourth graders will have a book this year, "HOLA". The first few classes they will be reviewing greetings and expressions of courtesy. They will also practice different dialogues in class.

In Unit I:  The students will review classroom objects, more greetings and expressions of courtesy, numbers, alphabets, and simple songs.
Homework will be assigned weekly. They will get an outline with their homework assignments.

FIFTH GRADE

Fifth graders will have Spanish on Monday and Wednesday. They will have homework on both days.  In Fifth Grade they will be reviewing many of the vocabulary words introduced in fourth grade.

Fifth grade book: QUE TAL. We will also continue to practice greetings and expressions of courtesy. Their homework will be written in their Spanish outline.

Unit I: The body parts ..it is a fun unit. After learning the vocabulary, the students are encouraged to make a poster of the body parts . Funny posters are fine. This will be their first project.

SIXTH GRADE

Sixth graders will have classes on Monday and Wednesday. They will have homework on both days. They will get an outline monthly with their homework assignments.
Sixth grade book: ADELANTE. Adelante means going forward. Basically, they will be learning useful vocabulary for traveling and many other day to day expressions. Is a great book.

Sixth graders will be assigned a Spanish-speaking country for the year. They will be working on projects relating to their assigned country throughout the school year.

The first project is a poster report on their assigned country. This report will be part of Hispanic Heritage Celebration.

The students will continue to practice expressions of courtesy and greetings. More dialogues will be encouraged in sixth grade.
